Big Red Weekend Recap:
It was a big weekend for our Big Red winter teams who were either finishing regular season play or starting the tournament trail. It started on Friday night with the boys basketball team hosting St. Paul in the regular season finale for the Big Red. The regular season ended on a tough note for the Big Red as both the JV and varsity teams lost to the Flyers. The varsity came out firing on all cylinders as they looked for another late season upset that would factor in to who won the league championship. They built a double digit 1st quarter lead and would hold a 19-8 advantage after 1. The 2nd quarter was all Flyers though as they caught fire and used strong defense to hold the Big Red to only 2 2nd quarter points. It was tough sledding for the rest of the game for the Big Red but they continued to battle and kept it within striking distance for most of the 2nd half before the Flyers pulled away late for what ended up being the league clinching win over the Big Red with a 53-43 final score. The Big Red end the regular season with a 11-11 overall record and 7-7 in conference play. They will have all week to prepare for their tournament opener that is scheduled for Friday night at home against Danbury.
The Big Red wrestling team was also in action on Friday night at the conference championship meet at Western Reserve. The Big Red placed 8 out of 10 competing wrestlers which was good for 5th place overall as a team. Noah Robinson led the way for the Big Red with a conference championship at 215 making him a 2x conference champion! Hunter McClure and Ben Trimmer followed with 2nd place finishes as both lost their championship round matches. Lucas Distl and Thomas Winegardner both took 3rd place while Zach Miller, Isaiah Miller, and Anthony Moore all took 4th place rounding it out for the Big Red. They will have the week to prepare for the sectional tournament on Saturday that will be held right here at PHS.
Then on Saturday, the Lady Big Red girls basketball team opened up tournament play by hosting a sectional final matchup with St. Paul. After beating the Flyers in OT at home early in the season and then losing the rematch just last Friday at St. Paul it was anybody's game coming into Saturday's tournament matchup. The Lady Big Red came out with intensity and a determination to make it their day and they did just that. After scoring the game's first basket on their first possession they would lead from start to finish as they used strong 1st half defense to build a solid lead at halftime and would continue that strong play during the 2nd half making key baskets on offense and stops on defense when needed en route to the 39-30 win. It was a great team win and marks the first sectional championship for the girls basketball program since the 2009-2010 season and advances them to the district tournament that will be held at Shelby HS this week. The Lady Big Red will take on 2nd seeded Seneca East on Thursday at 6pm at Shelby HS. Top-seeded Danbury will take on 3rd seeded Lucas in the other district semi-final at 7:30 on Thursday.
Also a special shoutout to our Big Red cheer squad who joined the Lady Big Red on Saturday and helped cheer them onto the big victory!
